Homemade Paper-Mache Bowls

paper-mache bowl

Making these paper-mache bowls is not only fun and creative, they also make excellent gifts for family and friends too! They can also literally be used as bowls to store anything in from keys and loose change to hair bands, sweets or even as a fruit bowl! Inexpensive to make and a lovely homemade gift!

To make your paper-mache bowls you will need the following:

1. Coloured card or paper

2. A round balloon or dish to use as a mould

3. A glue mixture made from 3 tbsp plain (all purpose) flour and 3 tbsp of water

4. Optional varnish to protect your bowl

5. Scissors

flour

Step 1

Firstly, paper-mache can get messy so protect your surfaces with old newspaper or a wipe-proof table cloth! Use aprons if possible too.

Next, prepare your materials by cutting your paper or card into long strips and blow up your balloon. (One balloon per bowl).

Then mix the 3 tbsp of plain (or all purpose) flour with the 3 tbsp of water and stir to form a creamy paste. This simple mixture forms a glue and is a great safe alternative for small children to work with. Now you are ready to get started!

Step 2

Briefly dip a strip of paper or card into the glue paste that you have made. I say briefly because if it gets too soggy then it can tear and fall apart. Now layer the piece gently over the balloon (or bowl) that you are using as a mould. Repeat the dipping for each strip of paper as you go building the bowl up.

Keep building up your layers until you have made your desired shape and depth of bowl. This may be approximately half-way up the balloon.

Then allow the bowl to dry, over-night if possible but you could speed this process up by putting the bowl in a safe, clean airing cupboard for several hours too.

Step 3

Once your bowl is completely dried out, you can carefully pop the balloon inside using something sharp like scissors and remove any balloon residue. Varnish your bowl to help it last longer and add any embellishments!

Perhaps you wish to paint your bowl, personalise it with your friend’s name or add sequins and feathers. You can even glue on pictures of people, places and pets to make your bowl even more special!

If you are gifting your homemade paper-mache bowl to a friend who loves music, then why not find some of the lyrics or the sheet music online for their favourite song or piece of music and print this out to use for your bowl too!
