DESSERT: Apple Roses

apple roses

Apple Roses are a delicious dessert and although they look intricate, they are actually quite simple to make! I will guide through making them step by step and I will show you exactly how to create these pretty and delicate desserts.

They are delicious served with soft vanilla ice cream or warm custard. Read on to find out how to make them…

To make 8 Apple Roses you will need the following ingredients:

1. 3 apples, cored and sliced width ways

2. 1 sheet of ready-roll shortcrust pastry

3. 3 tbsp caster sugar

4. 2 tsp cinnamon powder

5. 1 egg to glaze before baking

6. Icing sugar to dust

Step 1

Wash the apples and core them. Slice them quite thinly width ways and set aside in some cold water so they do not go brown as quickly.

Step 2

Lightly flour your work surface and unroll your sheet of shortcrust pastry. Slice it width ways into eight strips using a knife or pizza roller.

Step 3

In a small bowl, combine the cinnamon and caster sugar together to make cinnamon sugar. Then lightly brush the pastry strips with the egg (to help the cinnamon sugar to stick to it).

Step 4

Now place your apple segments along the length of each strip of pastry, roughly half way up. (See the photographs for further guidance). Layer them one on top of the other, each new apple piece slightly overlapping the previous one.

Step 5

Brush the apples and pastry with the egg again and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar  all over the apple slices and pastry.

Step 6

Now we are going to fold all the pastry and apple slices into rose shapes. The key here is to work slowly and carefully. Try to be gentle with the delicate pastry.

Don’t worry if some of your apple roses look more like squares than being round in shape as once they are baked and dusted with icing sugar, the ‘rose effect’ will still be present.

Step 7

Bake your pretty Apple Roses in the oven at Gas Mark 4/180C/350F for 20 minutes or until the pastry starts turning a light golden brown colour.

Allow them to cool, then sprinkle with icing sugar. Serve with vanilla ice cream!
