DESSERT: Chocolate Cake Tray Bake

This recipe has got to be one of my most popular and easiest cake recipes! You don’t need to know your way around the kitchen to get fantastic results with this simple recipe! This chocolate cake tray bake is ideal for baking for your children’s school fair or bake sale. It’s great if you have last-minute dinner guests coming over or if you are simply craving a delicious slice of chocolate cake heaven!

To make my Chocolate Cake Tray Bake, you will need the following ingredients:

1. 120g caster sugar

2. 120g butter, softened

3. 150g self-raising flour

4. 1 tsp baking powder

5. 3 medium eggs

6. 40g cocoa powder

For the chocolate icing:

1. 100g butter, softened

2. 50g icing sugar

3. 50g cocoa powder

Before we begin, grease your square cake tin with either butter or oil to help prevent sticking.

Next, preheat the oven to Gas Mark 4/180C/350F.

Step 1

Simply add all six of the cake ingredients to a large mixing bowl and whisk them together either by using an electric whisk or with a wooden spoon. It is not essential to the resulting texture that you sift the flour and baking powder either.

Step 2

Once you are happy with the consistency of your cake batter, then spoon it into the cake tin.

Smooth the cake batter out into the corners of the baking tin and try to even out the surface using a wooden spoon or spatula.

Step 3

Bake your cake in the oven at Gas Mark 4/180C/350F for around 30 minutes.

Allow the cake to cool completely before you add any icing.

Step 4

To make the chocolate icing, combine the butter, cocoa powder and icing sugar together in a small bowl. Use a whisk or a wooden spoon to mix it together until it is smooth and creamy in consistency.

Step 5

Smooth your chocolate icing on to the top of the (completely cooled) chocolate cake and voila! You have made your deliciously tasty chocolate cake tray bake in less than one hour! Now all that is left to do is to slice it into squares and enjoy it with your family and friends.
